Apparatjik‘Light Space Modulator’ installation and performances

The Apparatjik Light Space Modulator at Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin opened on Saturday 12 March with a performance by Apparatjik at 9:00pm. The band performed inside a large-scale cube, while images were projected on the sides of the cube and onto the glass windows surrounding the building.

From 13– 25 March, gallery visitors can experience three different daily programs, as well as two more performances by Apparatjik which will take place on 26& 27 March. The full program at the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin is:

DVD release party in Berlin

To celebrate the release of the‘Ending on a High Note– The Final Concert’DVD, there will be a party hosted by a-ha.com in Berlin on 25 March. Join us for a special‘sneak peek’ screening of the DVD, followed by an a-ha disco!

This event was planned very last minute, but we are fortunate to have the help of some of the Oslo fan party team to help make the event very special!

Party details:

Date:25 March
Time:8:00 pm until they kick us out– DVD screening will begin around 9:00 pm, with dancing to follow
Location:Goldapfel Café& Bar, Heinrich-Roller-Straße 20, 10405 Berlin
Tickets:€13 per person– this includes two drink tickets
Food: food can be purchased from the café menu until midnight

How to get tickets

• Fans can reserve their tickets beginning on 16 March at 11:00 am CET by e-mailingparty@a-ha.com
• The option to purchase tickets will be given in the order requests are received, so please do not e-mail before 11:00 am CET, and please only e-mail if you definitely can attend
• Ticket requests are limited to two (2) per person
• We will send a confirmation and payment information via e-mail within 24 hours, and ask that you purchase your tickets by 19 March
• If the party sells out, we will keep a waiting list of requests. If anyone does not pay for their tickets in the time allotted, we will release their tickets to fans on the waiting list in the order their requests were received.

a-ha receive the Spellemann Award of Honor

Tonight’s Spellemann award show at the Oslo Spektrum opened with a‘blistering’ version of‘The Sun Always Shines on TV’, performed by several artists including Thomas Dybdahl, Ida Maria and Bertine Zetlitz.

Following the opening song, a-ha was awarded the Spellemann Award of Honor. Morten and Magne were present to accept the award.“The band is a three-headed troll, but as you can see we are missing one head tonight. On behalf of us all I must thank you so much. We can not go away without thanking our families and wives,” said Magne Furuholmen.“Thanks to everyone in Norway, it has been a pleasure to entertain you over the years.” Morten added,“Enough said. Thanks to everyone.”

Apparently the band had been invited to attend the award show, but as they were not nominated in any category, they were unaware that they would be honored tonight.

Upcoming book releases

On 10 February, a book calleda-ha photographer– Just Loomiswill be released by Press Publishing. ThePress websitedescribes the 95-page book:

“There are some pictures that survive their own time because they are iconic. We all remember the first pictures of a-ha from the mid 80th century that accompanied the campaigns as Take On Me went to the top of the Billboard charts. They were signed by the American photographer Just Loomis. Loomis continued as a-ha’s court photographer for a little over the 90-century. In this photo book, Loomis for the first time gathered all their best a-ha fan breakthrough year. Many of them have never before been shown. The images are accompanied by comments from Warners powerful boss in the 80′s, Jeff Ayeroff and others in the circle around the band’s headquarters in Los Angeles. Preface: Magne Furuholmen. The Apparatjik Light Space Modulator

As many of you know, Magne has been involved with the music, art and film project known asApparatjiksince 2008. Concurrent with the demanding schedules of each of the band members’ other projects– including of course a-ha’s farewell tour in 2010 - Apparatjik has since released an album and two singles, and  performed three concerts in 2010. Now they are preparing for their first largescale project, to take place in Germany in March.

Apparatjikhas been invited by the Nationalgalerie Berlin to present the collective’s first largescale project in Germany in March 2011.

Apparatjikis a transdisciplinary working collective founded in 2008 by four world-renowned musicians: Guy Berryman (London), Jonas Bjerre (Copenhagen), Magne Furuholmen (Oslo), and Martin Terefe (London).Apparatjikfunctions as an experimental platform and collaborates with a pool of artists, media technicians, and designers, as well as scientists such as M.I.T. Astrophysics Professor Max Tegmark and curator Ute Meta Bauer, Head of the M.I.T. Program in Art, Culture and Technology.

The Apparatjik Light Space Modulatoris presented as a twofold project: during two weeks the installation can be accessed in the glass hall of the Neue Nationalgalerie and three unique concerts that will be performed at the same location. Those performances are inspired by the visual experiments of László Moholy-Nagy. Moholy-Nagy taught at the German Bauhaus, as did Mies van der Rohe who was the architect of the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin. At the center of both theApparatjikinstallation and concerts are moving images that project from a large scale cube into the open glass structure of the building into the city space— a reference to the kineticLicht-Raum-Modulatorcreated in 1930 by Bauhaus artist Moholy-Nagy.

Apparatjikʼsproject will conclude on March 27 with a special interactive composition performed in collaboration with the Deutsches Kammerorchester. This concert is dedicated to Mies van der Rohe on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of his birth.

The Apparatjik Light Space Modulatorincorporates low-res retro-futuristic visuals, gonzo-pop, randomness and pseudo-science, dadaesque humor, and fashion, in a celebration of convergence culture.Apparatjik’sblend of popular culture and playful references to art history places them in a space somewhere between art and popular culture. Last but not least, this project byApparatjikis to be understood as homage to the legendaryMeta-Musik-Festivalthat took place during the seventies at the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin.

The Apparatjik Light Space Modulatorwill be accompanied by a publication in collaboration with NODE Berlin Oslo to be published in late 2011 including a comprehensive documentation of this project.
