a-ha on‘Number One!’

Last night, the German Kabel Eins show‘Number One!’ featured a 45-minute documentary about a-ha. Much of the documentary footage was filmed in fall 2009, after a-ha announced their intention to retire. In separate interviews, Morten, Magne and Paul talk about their history together, career milestones, their reasons for ending a-ha now, and more. Here are some highlights from the interviews, as well as links to watch the clips online for those who missed the broadcast.

When asked why the band is calling it quits now, Paul said,“Every album is quite hard to make…we go through a big process, and we don’t make it easy on ourselves. It’s a lot of tugging and pulling. So I think maybe that was the biggest thing…It’s not creative anymore in a way, that becomes too desctructive.”

Was the decision to end a-ha mutual among the three members, or were there any opponents?

“If there was an opponent, it was probably me, because I was sort of halfway into the next album and writing for that. So I kind of advocated doing one more album. But having said that I am kind of excited. There’s lots of other stuff we can do, and that’s exciting.”

When you look back now at 25 years of a-ha, what is the first thing that comes to your mind as a resume?

“For me it is always linked to the albums and the music, and that’s like a scrapbook for me. Every song you wrote brings back a memory of that time, it’s like a picture book. Every album has a very distinct flavor, and it feels like we did quite a lot. We really got to live a boy’s adventure tale. We went round the world many times, we got to record in lots of different places, we got to see and meet everybody. Best thing of all, I met my wife right before it all started, so I got to share the whole thing with her. So it is linked to a lot of good memories.”

If you could desribe a-ha in one sentence, what would that be?

“Three solo artists.”

Paul also talked about songwriting, the band’s musical influences and the beginning of a-ha.

Paul interview, part one|Paul interview, part two

Morten talks about the‘Take on Me’ success:

“The only regret, when you have success like that, is that you don’t get to prove that you would have been a success without it. I have many times wished that we came out as a band before videos started to become important. Which was exactly when we started.”

{...}

“I would have liked to have been in a band, for instance, 10 or 15 years earlier, or 20 years earlier for that matter, where the focus would be much more on audio so to speak, much more than it was in our time.”

Morten also talks more about the three releases of‘Take on Me’ and the importance of having the right promotion plan and a record label fully behind them.

Morten interview, part one

Magne discusses‘The Living Daylights’, the Rock in Rio concert, and the mechanics of the music industry.

“When you’re hot, you’re hot, and when you’re not, you’re not. Every young kid that asks me for advice, I say it’s hard to give them because it is not what you want to hear. You’re just lucky to be there one day, and the next day even luckier to be there.”

About the breakup in 1993, Magne says:

“I think we all felt a little bit battle fatigued. I know certainly from my point of view, I was really sick of fame. I got to a point where you understand why people get lost with their success. Success stops meaning something to you, it becomes something that empties you out, instead of fills you.”

“It’s hard for people to understand if you haven’t been in that position. It’s interesting because I had a long talk with Chris Martin about that in Barcelona a few weeks ago. And I said that, I said you have to find a way back into enjoying going on stage every night. Because you put out so much energy that in the end you stop taking something back. And when you stop taking something back, it gradually hollows you out and takes things out of you.”

“You can be at the top of your game– I mean you can’t be much bigger than Coldplay are at the moment– you can be at the top of your game and not enjoy yourself. And it’s a scary thing because you create that world yourself, you do everything you can to make it happen. And when it does happen, all of the sudden the feeling gets lost, you get the sense of why did I do this? Why was this meaningful to me? And sometimes you have to step on the sand castle to start again.”

Magne interview, part one

Thank You All

A message from a-ha:

where to begin…
i suppose‘thank you, all’ for once sums it up perfectly.

thank you is really the only thing that makes any sense at this point. thank you fans and friends– for giving us your time, your minds, your passion, in some cases a good chunk of your respective lives, and no doubt considerable amounts of your money.

you have made it possible for us to do what we loved in the way we had hoped to do it.

this is the end for us, and we will not know what a future together could have brought.

but we do know what the past has held; it was pretty amazing to be a part of it.
from the start as childhood friends, to the peak of our career, and all the points inbetween,
a-ha has coloured our lives in ways we don’t even seem to comprehend ourselves.

this is as far as the road took us– but hey, we came a fair distance by any standard!

one thing is certain: we did it together. now a-ha will be a memory of a life we once shared.

so thank you all;)
we will not forget you and we hope that you do not forget us.

snipp snapp snute…

Iconic photos of a-ha

Step through the doors of Galleri MAP, and immediately you are surrounded by a carefully chosen selection of photos of a-ha from the early days of their career, taken by Norwegian photographer Janne Møller-Hansen. Printed on large aluminum panels, the images range from live concert shots to quiet, reflective moments, and each one will resonate with anyone who has followed the band’s career from the beginning.

In short, these are some of the most classic and well-known images of the band presented in a unique medium with high impact in this cozy gallery. It is well worth a visit to the gallery to spend some time among these stunning photos. Examine them from all angles to get the full effect of light on metal, the subtle transformation of shadows to clarity, the gradients offering an unexpected depth that a normal photographic print could not achieve.

However, if standard photos are more your interest, there is also a series of smaller photo prints available for the same selection of images.

Please note that on Saturday 4 December, the gallery will open earlier than usual to accommodate out of town visitors who may be in Oslo for a-ha’s final concert– opening hours will be from 10.00-17.00. Janne Møller-Hansen will be at the gallery from 10.00-12.00 that day, so if you have questions about the photos or her work with a-ha over the years, it is a great opportunity to learn about this first hand.

a-ha– From Bridges to Butterfly

When the band Bridges released their self financed LP“Fakkeltog” (Torchlight Procession) in 1980, few professed this to be the start of a success story unparalleled in Norwegian pop and rock history. When a-ha released their first single in October 1984, the situation in the Norwegian music scene was introvert with very few artists stepping out beyond the borders of the homeland. Through multi-million singles and album sales, a-ha quickly established themselves as a player to be reckoned with. With many of the contemporary artists of the 80’s fading into oblivion, the a-ha machinery has kept it going for more than 28 years before literallyending on a high note.

The presentation on Thursday, 2 December from 4-6pm at the National Library will take you through a select body of their discography, highlighting items of collector’s value, but also focussing on of the width in their global distribution. The great importance of the early days of Bridges and Poem will be touched upon as well as presenting a few mythbusters as far as their musical history goes. Through sound and slides, this boy’s adventure tale will be presented from the view of a music lover, fan and collector.

P.A. Stenersen (b. 1969– Military background and holder of a Cand.Mag,-degree (International Politics and English from the University of Oslo.) More than 10 years of international experience with marketing and sales through employment at Norwegian outdoor clothing brand Helly Hansen ASA and the china manufacturer Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik AS.

P.A. Stenersen has followed the band since the very beginning in 1984. Frustrated by the lack of international success by Norwegian bands in general and the annual embarrassment of hearing“Norway – nil points” at the Eurovision Song Contest, he embraced the music combined with the attitudes and ambitions of a-ha as they entered the scene in 1984. Started collecting in early 1986 when the 4 singles off their debut album were snapped up in one go. In addition to travelling Europeto see them live, he has kept with the band as a collector ever since and today boosts the biggest collection of a-ha and related in the world. With a 3 volume book edition capturing the band’s musical career as the ulterior target, the groundwork laid forth has given him recognition as one of the main experts on the band and their global discography.

‘a-ha hysteria’ at book signing

Fans started queuing early in the day for the 16.00 event at Tanum book store in Oslo, some even arriving directly from the airport for this last opportunity to meet a-ha and get an autograph. AsNRK reports, there were people from many countries present, braving the below-freezing temperatures in a queue that stretched down the block to get a copy ofThe Swing of Things: 1985-2010signed by Morten, Magne and Paul.

This photo was posted ona-ha.com Twitterduring the signing (click the image to view it in a larger size):

Some fans stayed in the bookstore after their books were signed, to watch the procedings and take photos. Regular shoppers had to step around the crowd to make their purchases.

Unfortunately the queue was so long and time was limited, so some waiting fans did not obtain autographs in the end. According toSide2, more than 100 waiting fans heard the disappointing news that the signing was over.

The author, Jan Omdahl, was also present for part of the signing event and was approached by fans requesting autographs as well. Jan later in the evening participated in a discussion with Norwegian music journalist Audun Vinger, at an hour-long session about the book and a-ha at the House of Literature.

One Last Hurrah– Oslo Fan Party

It’s time to celebrate!

Fans from around the world will be traveling to Oslo for a-ha’s final concerts in December, so it is the perfect time to celebrate a-ha’s career and their music! There have been many fan club parties over the years, and if you have been to one of those events you know how special they are. If you haven’t, this is your chance to experience that immediate feeling of belonging, and enjoy a-ha’s music and videos with other fans who understand how much it all means to you.

Thanks to the help and input of 20 fan volunteers from the UK, Ireland, Germany, Norway, Poland and America, we’ve got a great event planned! Read on for all the details!

The venue

Following the a-ha concert on December 3, head on over toFolketeateretfor the fan party. Just a short walk away from the Spectrum, Folketeateret will open its doors at 11:00pm, and we’ll have the place all to ourselves until 3:00am. Relax in the lounge area, dance to the a-ha playlist, watch a video presentation created especially for this event, participate in a raffle drawing for free prize giveaways, and make connections with other fans you may have only known online. The staff at Folketeateret are very excited to be hosting this party and are ready to help us make this a very special event.

The music

You read that right: only a-ha’s music will be played at the party. This will not be an 80s dance mix with a few a-ha songs thrown in, it will be four hours of your favorite songs and mixes, played loud enough to dance to, but not too loud to talk with friends. Our DJ for the evening is none other than David“Sowtz” Sowter, aka DJ Sowtz, a 34 year-old fan from Scotland who has been a DJ for 16 years. David’s favorite a-ha song is‘The Swing of Things’ (“The live rocky version,” he tells us), and his hero is Paul Waaktaar-Savoy. DJ Sowtz will take song requests leading up to the party, via the special Facebook Event we’ve created (see below).

The videos

Avid video collector Wesley Myers from the United States is known in the fan community as something of a video expert; he has a website at a-havideos.com and over time has collected hundreds of hours of interviews, commercials, TV performances and other video clips. Wesley has created video presentations for every American fan party, including rare footage and interesting, obscure facts about each of the clips.

Following the Irving Plaza concert fan party in 2005, Paul and Lauren received a copy of the video presentations Wesley had created for several US fan meetings. They were both very impressed with the quality of work and selection of material. Lauren thought Wesley had done a“fantastic job.” She continues, “I thought it was great. An unbelievable amount of work and material. It’s been such a kick to look through and remember.”

Here is a short clip to give you an idea what to expect from the video presentation at the Oslo fan party. For more information about Wesley’s video hobby, readthis interviewfrom 2006.

Connect with other fans

Fans from over 40 countries will be in Oslo during the band’s final concert weekend. If you’re planning to attend the party, head over toFacebookand RSVP. Use this Event page to connect with each other before the concerts, to share travel tips, discuss the party playlist, plan to meet up in Oslo and more.

Exclusive fan party keepsake and t-shirt

All party guests will receive, included with their ticket purchase, a fan party keepsake to commemorate this special event. There will also be a special‘fan pack’ of a t-shirt and drawstring backpack available to purchase next week via thea-ha.com store. Only 500 fan packs will be made, so be sure to order yours early!

Making a good last impression

Last week, the National Library of Norway opened its exhibitionHunting High and Low: 25 Years With a-ha. During theopening day conference on October 20, the audience watched a video greeting from Magne, which was taped in Germany where the band are on tour now. In the video, Magne explained that they could not be present because the band is touring in Europe, and where they are‘trying to make a good last impression.’

TheEnding on a High Notetour has been an extended fairwell leading up to the final concert this December 4. Every concert has been the last one in some way: the last stadium concert, the last festival, the last small club gig; the last goodbyes to South America, North America and Asia; the last concert at Royal Albert Hall, which has always been special to a-ha; the last tour of Germany, where a-ha has had so much success since their comeback in 2000; and coming up is the last full month of concerts and a-ha’s final farewell shows in Oslo.

Since March, a-ha has performed 51 shows in 16 countries. In an interview with Ken Bruce which was broadcast on September 28, Morten said,“We are completely immersed in just responding to this year, which is really the most intense working year that we’ve had for a long time. It’s hard work to quit,” he laughs.“We’re touring around the world and it’s a packed schedule and we’re right in the thick of it. It has been a wonderful run so far…this is the toughest tour that I’ve done, since the first world tour, which was a nine-month relentless tunnel.”

Magne adds,“We have also had a fun time with the audience and try to give them a very memorable last show. Once we get into England now it will feel a little bit like leaving home I guess, because this is where we formed as a band and this country shaped us as a-ha. I think it is our chance to thank the audience, thank the UK for what it’s done for us and hopefully leave a lasting impression, in a good way.”

With only 37 days left before the band’s final concert, a-ha will say farewell to 18 more cities in 10 countries.“We’re on so many farewell gigs now, and they’re all special. Every night you go on stage, it means everything that night,” says Morten.

Looking ahead to the final concerts in Oslo, in an interview with BBC Radio 2 on October 21, Magne said,“There is no doubt that they’re going to be quite emotional. We’ve gotten fan letters from people warning us already, and it would be a strange thing if we weren’t effected by the sentiment ourselves. It is a big chunk of our lives that we’re closing a chapter on.”

“As you inch towards the very end, you sort of allow yourself to absorb it,” Magne continues.“We’ve said that this is a celebration of a long career together and not a funeral, and we’ve maintained that attitude at the shows. We’re having a good time performing, so it’s going to be mixed emotions when we let it go.”

“We’ve always enjoyed playing together, that’s always been a fundamental arena for us to communicate on. And that’s better now than it probably has been for a long time.”

Today, Morten, Magne and Paul will take the stage in Germany for the last time, at a sold out show in Berlin at O2 World.

Back to the beginning

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the day“Take on Me” went to #1 in the US singles chart, thanks in part to the song’s ground-breaking video.

Recently the BBC published an article about the making of the video for“Take on Me” and what made it“a defining moment in the history of music promos.” The article includes an extract from“Commuter”, a video created by Mike Patterson, who would later go on to draw the iconic animated scenes in the“Take on Me” video.

HMV signing event in London

Fans began queuing on Tuesday evening at HMV in Oxford Circus to receive wristbands for a-ha’s last ever CD signing event the next afternoon. There were nearly 200 fans in line at 9:00am Wednesday, when HMV opened their doors and started distributing wristbands. Strategically placed throughout the store were displays of the new compilation’25′, which is out in the UK this week. a-ha videos played on the screens in the store throughout the day.

At 6:00 pm, fans were again queued at HMV, this time in the aisles near the back of the store, where a stage is set up for special events. Everyone had a chance to say a quick word to the band members and have their CD signed; some fans stayed even after they had gone through the line, to watch as friends also met the band or to take photos. When at last Morten, Magne and Paul had met everyone and signed hundreds of CDs, they took their leave with smiles and waves to the fans gathered in the store, and several fans shouted‘Thank you a-ha!’

HMV took some great pictures of the event, see them onFlickr.

‘Butterfly, Butterfly (The Last Hurrah)’ premieres

There are several updates today about a-ha’s final single,‘Butterfly, Butterfly (The Last Hurrah)’.

The single was released last week in Norway and debuted in the Norwegian singles chart this week at #13. The song continues to rise in the airplay chart in Norway, reaching #6 this week.

The single will have its radio premiere in the UK on theKen Bruce show on Radio 2on July 15. Broadcasts are available online for a week after they air, so if you can’t listen live there will be time to catch it in the coming days online.

Fans in Budapest, Hungary were the first to see a-ha perform‘Butterfly Butterfly’ live in concert last night at Papp László Sportaréna. a-ha opened their set with the new single, and there are a couple of video clips onYouTube.

Speaking of videos, if you’re followinga-ha.com on Twitteror checking for updates on the home page here, you already know that the video for‘Butterfly, Butterfly’ was filmed in England earlier this week, with director Steve Barron. As the director of seven of a-ha’s early videos, including their ground-breaking video for“Take On Me” twenty-five years ago, Steve Barron’s involvement with a-ha’s final video seems like an appropriate– not to mention exciting– collaboration to many fans. We don’t have information yet on the release date for the video, but we’ll be sure to post it as soon as we do.

In the meantime, if you haven’t seenthe photosfrom the video shoot, here the highlights (click the pictures to see a larger version):

The Hut Project

Aspire Design Studios, the company responsible for the technical development, design and support fora-ha.com, is currently involved in a very worthy and impactful effort to help orphans in a remote part of South Africa. With the enthusiastic support of a-ha and their management, we want to let you all know about this cause and how your support can make a difference.

The Hut Project

Excerpts fromhttp://thehutproject.org tell the story:

The community of Ingwavuma, a remote rural part of Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, suffers from extreme poverty, where 40% of the population are HIV+ and are dying of AIDS related illnesses. The life expectancy is just 39 years. Daily living is already a great struggle, water is scarce and food a constant worry. It is such hard work to build a hut when you are sick and hungry, and yet women and children have to build homes for their families.

Can our volunteers do the same at Hampton Court?

It was a simple and innocent question that inspired our group to build a stick house– home to too many in Kwa-Zulu. We want to draw attention to the poverty, and that we, the fortunate, can make a difference. We will be building and then sleeping in a stick house identical to those found {in Ingwavuma}, but this one will be in the gardens of Hampton Court Palace in August 2010 –a huge contrast.

During August, between the 18th and 21st, a handful of volunteers will be building a Zulu hut on the East Front lawn of Hampton Court Palace. ALL money raised from this project will go directly toOrphan Care, a charity which works in Ingwavuma. Orphan Care is hoping to build the first hospice in the area to provide palliative care for the dying. At the moment there is no support for families and people die without dignity in their huts, with no pain relief.

For more details about the project, it’s mission, the community needs it endeavors to address, and how you can help:
